Up From Zero HQ is written under the editorial pen name Nolan Briggs. I’m the person behind this site — blue-collar background, years in the trades, and a long, slow climb out of debt. The pen name exists to let me write honestly about money mistakes, debt amounts, and financial history without those details permanently attached to my legal name. The story, the experience, and the advice are all real.

Who built this

I’m Nolan Briggs, the founder and sole operator of Up From Zero HQ and BuiltFromNothing LLC. (Nolan Briggs is a pen name — I write under it to keep the specific money mistakes and debt numbers I share separate from my legal name.)

I didn’t grow up with a financial education. I grew up working — the kind of work where you’re paid by the hour, you live between paychecks, and nobody ever explains how interest compounds, what a credit score actually affects, or why the minimum payment on a credit card is designed to keep you paying forever.

I figured it out the hard way. By the time I got serious about money, I had debt I was embarrassed by, a credit score that closed doors, and no real idea where to start. So I started from scratch. I read. I tested systems. I made mistakes. I found what actually worked — not the motivational stuff, not the advice that assumes you already have money — but the practical systems a regular person with a regular paycheck can actually use.

That’s what Up From Zero is. It’s what I wish existed when I was starting out.

Every guide on this site is built around one idea: simple systems beat willpower.
